Our volunteer program has been very successful! Volunteers travel to Ghana and have the opportunity to work at the schools for the deaf teaching and tutoring students at all levels: elementary, junior high and high school. Working with the Ghanaian teachers, our volunteers help create the best learning environment possible, often providing one-on-one help that would not typically be available. Child Sponsor Program

Many families in Ghana are unable to pay the fees required for their deaf child to attend the residential schools. Thirteen deaf schools are located throughout Ghana, but often just the price for travel is too expensive for these families. These children are left behind with no opportunity to receive formal education. Signs of Hope International provides the opportunity for sponsors to lift this financial burden and give these children hope for a better future.

College Scholarships

There are bright deaf high school students that successfully complete their courses only to face the grim reality that they can never raise enough funds to attend college. These dedicated students are given the chance to attend college through the College Scholarship Fund. As the students complete their college courses, they often return to the deaf school systems where they become incredible role models for the younger children giving them hope that they can do the same.

Many of the teachers at the schools for the deaf find it difficult to learn sign language. This makes it very challenging to teach and communicate with their students. Very few sign language classes exist in Ghana. Signs of Hope International provides a way for these teachers to develop signing skills that are desperately needed in the classroom. Deaf mentors are hired to teach sign language at several of the deaf schools. As teachers progress through the program they are given a monetary incentive. Both teachers and students have responded very optimistically to this program.

Through our Pennies for Playgrounds project we are able to bring joy to the children at the schools for the deaf in Ghana. With the demands of running a deaf residential school, a place for children to play is not a priority. Pennies for Playgrounds provides permanent playground equipment such as swings, slides and merry-go-rounds for these deaf children to have fun. Schools can get involved by collecting pennies. Students will learn that by working as one we can accomplish great things. No contribution is too small. A penny can go a long way when we work together.
